A free Symbolab alternative

Symbolab is strong on calculus and keeps its full step-by-step behind a sign-in and a free-tier limit. Here the working is the default output and there is nothing to sign in to.

Drag one in or paste from the clipboard. JPEG, PNG or WebP. You get the transcription to check before anything is solved.

How to get a better answer
  • Paste the whole problem, including the instruction word — "simplify", "solve for x" and "factor" lead to three different answers.
  • Say what you have already tried. "I got x = 4 and the book says 2" turns a solution into a diagnosis.
  • Set the level in the settings button. A calculus shortcut is not a better answer if you have not met derivatives yet.
  • For a photo, get the whole problem in frame and hold the page flat — you get the transcription to fix before anything is solved.

How to switch

  1. 1

Build the expression in the formula editor

The same two-dimensional input Symbolab users expect — stacked fractions, real radicals, bounds on the integral sign — with an on-screen symbol keyboard.

  2. 2

Get the rule named, not just applied

Each step says which rule produced it: chain, parts, u-substitution, a named series test. That is the part worth reading twice.

  3. 3

    Check your own working instead

Paste what you did and get the first line that goes wrong, which is a mode Symbolab does not have.

What actually differs

Symbolab's free step-by-step solutions are limited and sit behind an account, with its practice sets and deeper solutions in the paid tier.

This site has no account, so nothing is attached to one — no quota, no history, and no sign-in wall in front of the photo path.

What Symbolab still does better

Its graphing, its notebook, and the breadth of its symbolic engine on unusual integrals. It is a mature product with a large question bank behind it.

Where this site is stronger is the diagnostic direction: finding the error in working you already did, rather than producing working for you.

Questions about switching

Is there a limit on step-by-step solutions?
Not per person, and there is no account to attach a limit to. The site shares one daily AI allowance across everyone; when it is used up you are told, and it resets at midnight UTC.
Do I have to make an account here?
No. There is no sign-up on this site at all, including for the photo solver — which is the point in the flow where most alternatives ask for one.
Does it handle calculus properly?
Limits, derivatives, integrals by every standard technique, and the series convergence tests — with the rule named at each step rather than silently applied.
