The one row worth arguing about
"Computed, not generated" is the row that decides how much to trust an answer. A computer algebra system manipulates symbols by rules; it does not make arithmetic slips. A language model reasons in text, which makes it far better at explaining why a method applies and measurably worse at a long chain of manipulation.
Neither is better in general. If you need a guaranteed-correct symbolic answer, a CAS is the right tool and no amount of explanation substitutes. If you need to know which of your own lines went wrong, a CAS has nothing to say — it was not asked about your working, and it cannot read it.
What "free" means in each case
- Free with a paywalled feature. The common shape: answers free, working paid. Mathway is explicit about this on its own upgrade page.
- Free with a metered allowance. A number of free solves attached to an account, refilling monthly. Fine until the evening you need the eighth one.
- Free with a shared ceiling. No account and no per-person limit, but the whole service shares one daily allowance. Nothing is metered against you; on a heavy day the site can run out. That is the model here, and it is stated plainly rather than buried.
None of these is dishonest. They just fail differently, and it is worth knowing which failure you are signing up for before you are relying on the thing.
